When Juliana’s father dies and her dissolute brother Lucian inherits the title and returns to Chidleigh Juliana’s life becomes much more interesting, especially as Lucian has an interest in the supernatural. The major part of this engaging time-slip/ghost story (choose according to your own preferences) is set in the 1770s and tells of Juliana Clare, the youngest daughter of a landed English family and her initially routine life on the family estate, Chidleigh. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book is so short, and there's very little in it apart from the lecture, but it's still always nice to spend some time with Michaela. The speech itself is inspiring, raw, honest, very emotional to listen to in parts (CW for sexual assault and mention of suicide), with Michaela speaking about her life, her progression from young drama student to actress/creator/producer, but also racism, abuse, misogyny, and the concept of Misfits in general. ![]() I know it's on Audiobook too, but it was lovely to be able to see her as well as hear her speak (I have to confess, I did speed her up a bit, I'm sorry Michaela). ![]() What I did was play the video of her speaking on YouTube and read along at the same time, and it was a most enjoyable way to enjoy it. It led me to other books that told me who some of us were, and how some of us lived.” ![]() “It opened the door to my soul and told me who I was. But that changed when the book genre pulp fiction – mass-produced cheap paperbacks with a focus on raunchy content – created a market for quickly-consumed literature. While the portrayal of the lesbian lifestyle was overly crass and hyper-sexualized, the literary representation also acknowledged that non-straight women existed – and that the possibility of creating one’s own life outside heteronormative standards existed. If representation in pop culture and media still leav es a lot to be desired, imagine being a lesbian in the 1950s: The chances of seeing your sexual identity pictured was slim to none. ![]() ![]() ![]() Review 2: but working relationships are so much more interesting than romance! less necking, more super secretarying for 2014i don't necessarily object to romance on general principle but for this story i kinda wish it'd taken more time about it. more is considered josei (for adult woman), so there is minor nudity, and mature themes.
